Effective Organizational Change

Often I hear frustration from leaders disappointed that their great ideas for organizational improvements fall apart upon implementation and end up resulting in staff discord. The problem usually comes down to one of three failed steps:

 1)     LISTEN. Did you begin by listening to staff and whomever else (service population?) will be impacted by the change?

2)     ADAPT. Is your plan shaped by the input you received? Have you developed a path that addresses concerns?

3)     TRANSPARENCY. Have you shared your plan and provided opportunity for questions? Have you shared how the feedback you received was taken into account in developing your plan and opportunities for additional input?

REPEAT. As you implement your change, are you prepared to repeat the cycle – seeking input as things unfold, adapting plans based on how impacted individuals indicate things are progressing, and transparently sharing progress and adaptations undertaken?

Pausing thoughtfully to develop good process can make all the difference in support for organizational change and can in itself be one of the most impactful organizational improvements of all.
